STILL LIGHTS is a collection of seven pieces drawing inspiration from the fundamental principles of photography.
Each project, which can be a piece of furniture, an object or an installation, is composed of three elements: a frame, a subject and a light source. Delving into the technical world of photography, these projects touch on filtering, reflection, balance and projection to create a series of surrealistic pieces that situate themselves somewhere between a still life image and an object. Each member of the international team of young designers hosted at FABRICA will cast light on the subject, composing an image referencing personal and local culture.
On Display by Kirsty Minns
Beech cabinet with glass sliding doors, screen printed and ceramic plates. Camoflagued in an optical illusion behind sliding glass doors a series of 12 plates that when the cabinet is closed creates a mysteriously sober still life scene. When the doors open a new perspective is revealed.
Light Drawer by Mariana Fernandes
A commode with a light sturucture embedded within the drawer. The behaviour of the light mimics the movement of the drawer, sliding and illuminating the illustrated paper within.
Time Stand Still by Giorgia Zanellato
The clock face is hidden behind smoky mirrored glass and only becomes visible once the light is switched on, which is the real function of the mock pendulum that hangs underneath. Eight LEDs are positioned in a circle to suggest the clock face, unifying the three elements of light, subject and frame, none of which works without the other.
Ongoing Table by David Penuela
Interactive table cloth that changes its pattern depending on the objects placed on the plates.
Nail meets Bookshelf by David Raffoul
An elegant display solution for pocket books. Recalling the high shelves often seen in Mediterranean homes, what is unusual about this one, is that it pivots at one end, so its natural position is actually vertical. What holds it horizontal is a large wooden peg at the opposite end. In the end we can extract the three elements of subject, frame and light.
Plate Life by Dean Brown
A domestic still life with a poetic nod to the humble dish rack. Two ceramic Plates and a light-source are carefully positioned in a state of interdependency - the larger silvered plate directing the light back upon itself.
The Shelf by Sam Baron
A mirror with a shelf that depends on the vase to stand streight. Without the vase and flowers on the right place, the shelf falls down to the other side.
